* EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a structured psychotherapy approach that helps individuals process and reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories.

It involves focusing on a traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or various forms of tapping).

Fundamentals of EMDR Therapy:

One of the most significant differentiators of this therapy method, and a contributing factor to it's efficacy is it's core functional application of the notion of "Dual-Presence". Dr. Francine Shapiro developed this unique therapy method in 1987 and revolutionized psychotherapy. Her fundamental innovation was the discovery that the therapist could act in certain ways using what she called the 8 phase AIP (Adaptive Information Processing). The notion of duality in this model engages the patient in a self-directed reprocessing of incidents from their past, all in an internal sequence of "re-memorying" the incidents and co-temporaneous self-beliefs.  "Dual-presence" allows the therapist to keep the patient rooted in the presence using the proven EMDR protocol. Through this sequence, the patient uncovers their earliest trauma, the negative cognition at that time, and is directed to an epiphany and a substitute positive cognition that is deeply curative.

Focus on the memory:

This process helps the brain reprocess the memory and reduce its negative impact. How it works: The therapist guides the client to focus briefly on the disturbing memory using bilateral stimulation, while focusing on the memor. The client actively engages in the bilateral stimulation, such as following the therapist's fingers or tapping.

Processing and reduction:
The combination of focusing on the memory and bilateral stimulation is believed to help the brain process the memory and reduce its emotional intensity.

Desensitization and reprocessing:
Over time, repeated/iterative applications of the AIP sequence can help desensitize the memory and allow it to be reprocessed in a way that reduces its negative impact on the individual's well-being in their contemperaneous present.

Benefits:

  • Reduced emotional distress:
EMDR therapy can help reduce the emotional distress associated with traumatic memories.
  • Decreased PTSD symptoms:
It is effective in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), helping to alleviate associated symptoms.
    Improved overall well-being.
  • Addressing traumatic memories: EMDR therapy can contribute to improved overall well-being and a greater sense of emotional resilience.

Who it's for:

  • Individuals with PTSD: EMDR is a widely recognized and effective treatment for PTSD.
  • Individuals struggling with the emotional impact of trauma: It can be helpful for individuals who have experienced traumatic events and are experiencing emotional distress.
  • Individuals with other mental health conditions: EMDR therapy can also be beneficial for those with other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and panic disorder.

Important Note: EMDR therapy is a structured treatment approach, and it is essential to get the proper training to become an experienced EMDR therapist.

Let the healing take root

Put this therapy to work today and be amazed at your results

As the client heals, their sense of who they really are emerges. They are able to access memories and negative cognitions that are holding them back. They are able to reprocess those memories, form new positive thoughts about themselves, break old patterns, and seek different outcomes they truly want. As they change before your eyes, their joy and success is a true mutual reward.

Your role as therapist in delivering this EMDR intervention is to act as the stenographer as they rewrite their past memories and develop stories about who they are now and what experiences they can manifest for themselves in the future.
