The What & Why of 2-Square
The 8 Phase AIP model is the fundamental therapy method. However, the application with children needs to be adapted. Children do not always talk about difficult experiences in the same way adults do. Drawing and storytelling can provide a more natural way for them to organize and communicate what they are experiencing. The 2-Square framework uses these familiar forms of expression within the structure of the EMDR model. It gives clinicians a practical way to help younger clients identify distressing experiences and beliefs while remaining attentive to developmental level, readiness, and clinical safety. The approach is designed to be structured enough for the therapist to follow while flexible enough to adapt to the individual child. Throughout the course, I demonstrate how I have used the framework in clinical practice and how it can be incorporated into the eight phases of EMDR.
